4) Michigan

Where you live has a huge impact on your cost of living in Michigan. Michigan has a lot to offer with beautiful scenery, affordable homes in most of the state minus a few select areas, and low cost of consumer goods. Still, while considering that property taxes are some of the highest in the country, Michigan’s cost of living is nearly 10% lower than the national average. Everyone knows about the downfall of the Detroit car manufacturers, and while cities like Detroit and Flint still appear to be spiraling downward, that is not to say the rest of the state is.

The recession hit Michigan particularly hard, accounting for huge unemployment numbers. However, local and state governments have been working hard to turn things around and turn those once deflated cities and towns into revitalized meccas for middle-aged families looking for an affordable place to live and hipsters trying to snazz up cities like Detroit who still has a luster under all that varnish.
