2) Kansas

This agricultural rich state is self-sufficient in many ways, which is the key to having a low cost of living in Kansas. Known for sunflowers and waves of wheat fields, it is no wonder that the price of wheat-based products are exceptionally low: 35% lower than the U.S. average.

An agricultural economy does keep income levels lower than average, however, homes are affordable, jobs exist in a variety of sectors, and several leading universities and research centers also provide opportunities for advancement and higher education, as well as attract a young and eager population that tends to stay once settled in. Kansas is actually a lead state in developing and trialing renewable energy sources such as solar energy, and windmills, and cleaner gases for fuel, and thus has a number of job opportunities within these fields.

Kansas offers good medical facilities, especially closer to the cities, with costs that are significantly below the national average. However, with all that fresh air around, does a person really need to go to the doctor that often?
