She received international acclaim for her portrayal of Tina Turner in the bio-pic, What’s Love Got to Do With It (1993), for which she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and earned an Academy Award nomination. Always compelling to watch, Bassett has also been a regular player in the ensemble of actors for television’s American Horror Story, bringing her outstanding presence to every role. Her educational pedigree matches her vitality and talent as an actor. She obtained a scholarship and enrolled in African-American studies at Yale University, where she received her Bachelor of Arts. Bassett then attended the Yale School of Drama, where she completed a Master’s in Fine Arts degree in 1983. It was during her graduate school years at Yale that she met her future husband, actor Courtney B. Vance, who graduated several years later.
