2) You Will Depend Too Much on Social Security

Historically, Americans relied on their Social Security income after retirement to pay the way. In the past you could start taking Social Security a lot sooner, though, and most people also had corporate pension plans to support them. Pensions are not nearly as common in this day and age. In order to even start receiving 100% of your monthly Social Security benefit you have to wait until age 66 if you were born before 1960 and if you were born after 1960, the full retirement age is 67. That’s late in the game, and many find that Social Security income isn’t enough to pay today’s typical overhead and expenses. Don’t depend on Social Security, but instead start funding your own retirement savings account so that you don’t have to worry whether Social Security will be enough.
