10 Wealthiest Neighborhoods in North Carolina

10) Bald Head Island

Fans of the movie “Weekend at Bernie’s” might recognize Bald Head Island since it was the main filming site. It is the home of “Old Baldy,” the state’s oldest lighthouse, and can only be accessed by a 20-minute ferry ride from Southport. Most residents drive golf carts to get around the protected barrier island. The people that live on the island must adhere to strict conservation regulations that protect local wildlife; in particular, sea turtles that nest heavily on the island. Nightly turtle walks are conducted by the Bald Head Island Conservancy. Though the population was only 158 in 2010, it’s also a popular tourist destination because of its 14 miles of beaches, wildlife, and historical role in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Average income is $45,585.
